Excerpt

Ilanna's hand darted to her sword. The pain of her scorched flesh didn't stop her from drawing the blade.
"Wait!" Master Gold's voice cracked like a whip. "Follow me."
He scurried from the Guild Council Chamber. Ilanna fell in step behind him, her eyes wary. Chaos reigned in the Night Guild. From all around, cries, shouts, and the clash of steel echoed off the earthen walls of the tunnels. Men hurried to and fro, directionless, uncertain where the threat came from.
Yet Master Gold led them away from the tumult.

"No." Master Gold shook his head. "We need to hide."
here are we going?" Ilanna demanded. "We need to fight."

Ilanna jerked to a stop. "What?" Fury burned in her chest. "We're under attack, and your first thought is for your own skin?"

"Think about it, Ilanna." The words poured from his mouth in a rush. "I am Master of the Night Guild. What will happen to the Guild if I am killed, or worse, captured?"

"But we don't know who's attacking us!" Ilanna half-turned toward the sound of fighting. "We have to find out more."

Master Gold gripped her arm. "Does it really matter?" His jaw muscles worked. "Either the Duke's Arbitors have found our tunnels, or the Bloody Hand has. There's no heroism in dying today."

Ilanna clenched her fists. "Damn it, Master Gold! We have to help." The clash of steel and the cries of fighting men grew louder.

"No, we don’t." The Guild Master shook his head. "We need to be safe. House Serpent and House Bloodbear were formed for just this eventuality. They've enough fighters between them to drive out a small army."

"They're going to get killed!" Ilanna protested.

"And they've known that since the first day they were chosen by their Houses. Just as you knew what would happen if you were caught in the wrong mansion." He gripped her sword arm. "But I must live. If we are to recover from this, we will need a clear head and a firm hand to direct our next step. You know as well as I that there is no one better suited to leading the Guild in a time like this than me. If that means I must act the coward and hide, so be it. I do it for the Guild."

Ilanna looked in his eyes. His expression showed no sign of fear, only the cold pragmatism that had made him such a useful ally. He spoke the truth. That didn't mean she had to like it.

"Well," she snarled, "you may be comfortable running and hiding, but I stand with my House!"

"With those hands?" Master Gold's voice grew harsh. "You can barely hold that sword without wincing. You wouldn't last two minutes in a fight."

Ilanna wanted to argue, but the pain radiating through her scorched palms forestalled her argument.

"If you will not listen to reason," Master Gold snapped, "you will obey a direct command. Protect me, Journeyman Ilanna of House Hawk. Protect your Guild Master. That is an order." His eyes narrowed. "And before you protest, remember that you are still a Journeyman. You have not yet been released from the oaths you swore to your House, to the Guild. To me."

Ilanna growled low in her throat. "Damn you, Master Gold!" She had to heed his command.

"Let's go." Master Gold jerked his head down a side corridor. "To my office."

The Guild Council Chamber stood a few hundred paces from the Guild Master's quarters, on neutral territory belonging to none of the Houses. Master Gold and Ilanna covered the distance in less than a minute.

"Secure that door," Master Gold instructed.

Ilanna threw the deadbolt. The door, built of solid Ghandian blackwood, would keep out anything short of a battering ram.

"Now what?" Her gaze darted around the room. If they dragged the Guild Master's enormous desk in front of the door, it could buy a few more minutes.

"Leave it," Master Gold waved her away from the heavy furniture. "This way." He strode over to a bookcase, upon which sat seven golden figurines: a hawk, a serpent, a scorpion, a bloodbear, a fox, a hound, and a grubber mole. The Guild Master pulled on the hawk. Mechanisms deep in the wall clicked, and the bookcase slid to one side, revealing a darkened tunnel beyond.

"Secrets within secrets, Ilanna." The Guild Master pointed to the alchemical lamp that hung on the opposite wall. "We'll need light."

Ilanna darted across the room and lifted the lamp from its sconce. Once inside the hidden passage, Master Gold pressed on a stone and the bookcase slid shut without a sound.

Ilanna held up the lamp. The tunnel ran for ten paces before turning a corner. "Where does this go?" she whispered.

"To the sewer tunnels beneath the city. And to the chambers of every House Master."

Ilanna's eyebrows shot up. "What?"

Master Gold grinned and shrugged. "There is much about the Night Guild known only to myself and the Masters I trust."

"Master Hawk?"

The Guild Master nodded.

Relief flooded Ilanna. "So he'll be safe." Master Hawk could hide until the Serpents and Bloodbears dealt with the threat.

Master Gold's expression darkened. "You've known Jagar Khat for years." Sorrow filled his eyes. "Have you ever known him to back down when someone threatened his House?"

Ilanna's gut clenched. Master Hawk would be the first to face whatever came through the doors of the Aerie. He would protect his House, the cost be damned.

Master Gold's hand gripped her shoulder. "You can't go out there. You can't save him."

Ilanna whirled. "Damn you, Master Gold!" She drove a fist into the earthen walls.

The Guild Master's voice dropped to a whisper. "He'll survive this. He has to." He spoke as if trying to convince himself.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Andy Peloquin: Lover of All Things Dark and Mysterious
I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist--words are my palette. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of fantasy heroes, villains, and everything in between. I'm also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy novels.

Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!

GOOD MONDAY ALL

Good Monday morning all . Today we have a great treat for you . I love this author so much . I have been reading his stories since I was a teen ager . He has a new book out THE WHISPERING ROOM by Dean Koontz

                         BOOK BLURB

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jane Hawk—fiction’s most relentless, resourceful, stunning new heroine—continues her battle against a murderous conspiracy in the riveting sequel to The Silent Corner.

“No time to delay. Do what you were born to do. Fame will be yours when you do this.”

These are the words that ring in the mind of mild-mannered, beloved schoolteacher Cora Gundersun—just before she takes her own life, and many others’, in a shocking act of carnage. When the disturbing contents of her secret journal are discovered, it seems certain that she must have been insane. But Jane Hawk knows better.

In the wake of her husband’s inexplicable suicide—and the equally mysterious deaths of scores of other exemplary individuals—Jane picks up the trail of a secret cabal of powerful players who think themselves above the law and beyond punishment. But the ruthless people bent on hijacking America’s future for their own monstrous ends never banked on a highly trained FBI agent willing to go rogue—and become the nation’s most wanted fugitive—in order to derail their insidious plans to gain absolute power with a terrifying technological breakthrough.

Driven by love for her lost husband and by fear for the five-year-old son she has sent into hiding, Jane Hawk has become an unstoppable predator. Those she is hunting will have nowhere to run when her shadow falls across them.

                         MY REVIEW

This is the second book in the Jane Hawk series and picks up right where book one has left off. Jane is driven to find out who is killing innocent people and figure out who is doing this to these innocent people . She is also trying to figure out who is using this horrible nano technology for the evil intent. She is spurred on by the love of her dead husband and her son who has gone into hiding to keep him safe .
I adore the characters in this book They are so complex and so well written . Jane is such a strong woman to become the worlds most wanted just to find out who is behind the murders and why her husband committed suicide .  She does have her break down moments and we do see her softer side but over all she is one kick ass heroine .  She is willing to do whatever it takes to get the bad guy. The evil guys are truly evil and you really want to see them taken down . But the evil is it really evil or is it  technology taking over . Do we have the safety set up for the technology. You never know what the future can hold .
This is a great book and when I started reading I couldn't put it down . I ended up with a book hangover cause I read well into the night . The author does a great job in bringing the suspense and intrigue . It did take a bit to get into the book but once I day I couldn't put it down . The author is such a great story teller I can't wait to read book three in the series . So if you want a great series check them out . You will not be disappointed .

WOOHOO MADE IT TO FRIDAY

Good morning all made it to Friday , illness hasn't beaten me down . Today we are going to review the brand new book by an author I adore . THE KING OF BONE AND ASH  by J.D Horn

                         BOOK BLURB

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Witching Savannah series comes the story of a young witch’s quest to uncover her family’s terrifying history...
Magic is seeping out of the world, leaving the witches who’ve relied on it for countless centuries increasingly hopeless. While some see an inevitable end of their era, others are courting madness—willing to sacrifice former allies, friends, and family to retain the power they covet. While the other witches watch their reality unravel, young Alice Marin is using magic’s waning days to delve into the mystery of numerous disappearances in the occult circles of New Orleans. Alice disappeared once, too—caged in an asylum by blood relatives. Recently freed, she fears her family may be more involved with the growing crisis than she ever dared imagine.
Yet the more she seeks the truth about her family’s troubled history, the more she realizes her already-fragile psyche may be at risk. Discovering the cause of the vanishings, though, could be the only way to escape her mother’s reach while determining the future of all witches.

                          MY REVIEW

Welcome to New Orleans, the city steeped in voodoo and witchcraft . Where the Marin family is a magical family . Alice Marin is the youngest and has been locked away in an asylum . For years she is locked away in her own cage and when she is released she is out to find out what is going on with the magic that is leaking into the world . But as she tries to figure it out , she might be in over her head and finding out her family might be more responsible for the vanishing witches then first thought. As she dives deeper into the past , will she survive and will she fight for the future of all witches , not just her family . l
This book is set in a town where anything can happen . The author paints such a beautiful gothic story . He takes us on such an adventure that had me reading well into the night . The characters are larger then life and very well written . The character of Alice is such a sweet loving character . You want to wrap her up and keep her safe but she is stronger then she realizes and is so smart . You will cheer for her and cry with her . There are so many strong characters and they are all so complex , you will love them and hate them at the same time .
This book is a steady read , there really isn't a lot of action at the beginning . We get a lot of the history and secrets there are so many secrets that are in this book and you won't put the book down until you figure out all the secrets that everyone is hiding . The author sets up the story and the history of the witches very well . He is very detailed in their stories and the way he writes will keep you enthralled .  I had a book hangover after I finished this book . I couldn't put it down until I finished .  So if you want a great story that is steeped in old ways and has lots of history of witches and the old ways . This is the new series for you . I can't wait for book two in the series to see where the author takes Alice . So check out the new series you won't be disappointed .

EXCERPT:

Fall brought cooler weather, and with it, nature’s kaleidoscope of colors. The trees shed their greenery and displayed glorious shades of red, yellow, and orange. You could almost taste the pumpkin spice in the air. It had always been my favorite time of the year, but now I found myself resenting the cooler weather. The change in seasons meant Jesse had to work more for his landscaping job, clearing away fallen branches and leaves before they became hazards for drivers and pedestrians alike. I missed him during the long hours he was away. I tried to make the best of it, though.

Our very active sex life was great inspiration for the hot scenes in my book. We were compatible in the bedroom in so many ways. Neither of us ever shied away from trying new things in bed, and it was fun vying for who would take control. Each time we were together, it was a new experience, an adventure. Finding my sexual equal was both refreshing and liberating.

“I’m under your spell. I don’t know what you’ve done to me, but I just can’t stay away from you.” His words spoke directly to my heart. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach; something I hadn’t felt since I was a teenager. Things with Jesse felt like they were perfect, almost too good to be true. I was a little afraid to pinch myself for fear I’d wake up and find it had all been a dream. I knew I had a history of falling in love too quickly, though, so I was a little afraid of letting myself really relax and let him in. After everything I’d been through, what if I ended up jinxing things?

“If there’s magic involved, I’m consumed by it, too. I feel the exact same way.” Every waking minute, it seemed, my thoughts were on him. I’d remember how I felt when he’d hold me, when he kissed me. When I was alone, my thoughts traveled to his gentle touches and caresses when we’d make love. When we were apart, time couldn’t seem to move fast enough until we could be back in each other’s arms, and that thought was terrifying. I loved and I feared my body and mind’s reactions to him. He made me vulnerable. He made me hope. We were headed for the kind of love you only see in romance novels, but I knew I was giving him the power to crush me if he chose. Love was always a risk, but the reward was worth it if you found the right one. I’d just never dared to dream that it could happen to me.

“When I get off work, I want to take you somewhere.”

“Oh? Where are we going?”

“H
I giggled. “Give me a hint?”
mm… well, I could tell you, but I think it would be more fun to surprise you.”

“Nope.”

I stuck my lower lip out, though I knew he couldn’t see it over the phone. “Come on! You have all this work stuff keeping you busy all day, but now I won’t be able to write because I’ll be crazy with curiosity.”

“You know, you’re adorable when you pout.” I could hear his smile through the phone. “Bring a sweater. I have to go, Babe. See you soon.”

HAPPY FRIDAY ALL

Good Friday all . Today we are going to review Naima Simone's new boo SCORING WITH THE WRONG TWIN .

                        BOOK BLURB

Shy, awkward Sophia Cruz has a hard time telling her vivacious identical twin “no.” But when her sister begs her to swap places for a modeling shoot, she caves … again. Then Zephirin Black walks onto the set. The brooding, aloof, and gorgeous tight end for the Washington Warriors. But she can keep it professional… She has to. Because the adorkable Cruz twin has no luck with guys once they compare her to her sister.
After a bad break-up, Zeph hasn’t been big on second chances—and even less with trust. But he finds himself giving please-call-me-by-my-middle-name-Sophia both. The woman he’d dismissed as a spoiled cover model is different from the first time he met her. Quirkier. Funnier. Definitely sexier. What started as one night turns into another…and another…and another…
Still, Sophia can’t go on keeping her secret from him. But telling Zeph the truth will mean losing him for good.

                       MY REVIEW

WOW is the first word that comes to mind when you sit down and read . This is a hot sexy read . That will keep you reading until the wee hours of the morning . When Sophia's twin sister gets double booked for a modeling shoot . She convinces Sophia to take her place .  Well when she does she meets Zeph and wow the sparks fly . But will the second chance be given especially when the person is not the person he thought she was . Will love survive .
I fell in love with Zeph and Sophia . They are such a hot, fun couple. Zeph is oh so hot and just oozes sex but there are moments you kind of want to slap him upside the head . He is well just he is a man who needs a good woman . He has some big trust issues and so wants to trust but can't .  He is flawed but you fall in love with him anyway. Sophia is such a sweet girl . She thinks that she just isn't a beautiful as her twin sister Giovanna . She is the nerdy , geeky sister . So when she decides to do it you see her struggle with the fact that she is as beautiful as her sister . And yes I did want to shake her a few times because her and Zeph belonged together .
The book took me on such an emotional journey , I couldn't put the book down . The relationship between the two and the lies kind of drove me crazy . I was waiting for someone to blow her cover or Giovanna to show up somewhere . It broke my heart every time Sophia had to lie to Zeph . It took them the longest time to realize that they belonged together . They drug me along for the ride . Trust me I wanted them together so badly . With every good love story you know there will be strife and misunderstandings before their happily every after . This book just proves that nerdy girls and football hunks belong together . So if you want a good hot read for this winter check it out.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY EVERYONE

Welcome to Wednesday, hump day . Today we are going to review THE CHALKMAN by C,J Tudor this is her debut psychological suspense book

                        BOOK BLURB

In 1986, Eddie and his friends are just kids on the verge of adolescence. They spend their days biking around their sleepy English village and looking for any taste of excitement they can get. The chalk men are their secret code: little chalk stick figures they leave for one another as messages only they can understand. But then a mysterious chalk man leads them right to a dismembered body, and nothing is ever the same.
In 2016, Eddie is fully grown, and thinks he's put his past behind him. But then he gets a letter in the mail, containing a single chalk stick figure. When it turns out that his friends got the same message, they think it could be a prank . . . until one of them turns up dead.
That's when Eddie realizes that saving himself means finally figuring out what really happened all those years ago.
Expertly alternating between flashbacks and the present day, The Chalk Man is the very best kind of suspense novel, one where every character is wonderfully fleshed out and compelling, where every mystery has a satisfying payoff, and where the twists will shock even the savviest reader.

                         MY REVIEW

This is the type of book where you sit down and start to reading and don't put it down until you are done . This book is sent in a small town in England but I will tell you this isn't a sweet cozy mystery . This book bounces between 1986 and 2016 following a group of kids and the aftermath of murder in a small town .  Eddie and the gang are hanging out in a small town in England . They have a secret code of chalk man to let them know where to meet and so on . But things aren't so rosy they have their enemies and their bullies . Oh and the creepy new teacher that seems to be showing up wherever they are . Now bounce ahead to 2016 Eddie is all grown up and teaching in a small school. Thinking life is pretty good until the day a letter comes for him with the drawing of a chalk man . His friends have the same letter all thinking its a joke until one of them dies .  Will Eddie be able to figure everything out and save his own life
The characters in this book are very well written and complex . Eddie is actually a pretty screwed up he has a lot of insecurities .  His buddies are a mixture of the big funny guy and the loner . They kind of remind of the goonies with a darker twist . The creepy teacher is well just creepy . He is one weird dude . The cast of characters are well written and you will fall in love with them and also hate some of them at the same time .
This is a well written book that will keep you on the edge of your seat . Over all I really enjoyed reading but there were times when I felt that it dragged just a little . Especially in the 1986 part of the story. It just seemed to lag a little bit . Overall this book had me on the edge of my seat and the twist at the end had me going WTH  never saw that coming . So if you want a book that will give you a bookhangover and have you going never saw that coming . Check out CHALK MAN you won't be disappointed .

GOOD FRIDAY MORNING ALL

Good morning all , we made it to Friday , hope you are all staying warm and reading some great new books . Today I am going to review a new contemporary romance from one of my favourite authors . Lets check out VICE by L.M Pruitt .

                        BOOK BLURB

Everybody is addicted to something....

There are three things Jeannie Jackson knows for certain:

1. Relationships are more trouble than their worth.
2. There's no such thing as too much of a good thing.
3. She's never going back to Cotton Creek.

When tragedy strikes, pulling her back to her hometown and right in to the arms --and bar--of the last man she ever expected to see again, Jeannie starts to wonder what else she's been wrong about and whether love, like every other vice, is too addictive to walk away from....

                     MY REVIEW

Growing up poor in the small town of Cotton Creek . Jeannie has be humiliated and shunned most of her life . The mean girls group had their fun with her. She left and vowed never to return . That is until the day her sister dies and she has to head home to take care of her sisters kids . But this time things are different and she is stronger and ready to put anyone and everyone in their place . Then she runs into the boy who broke her heart but now he is the man she can't get enough of . Will they be able to put the past behind them and let love bloom .
This is a quirky fun read . The characters are well written and complex. Jeannie and Abraham are so hot together in and out of bed . HOLY SMOKE  is all I can say . Jeannie is as tough as nails and trying to keep it together while she settles back into life in Cotton Creek . She is a journalist that is highly regarded and has he own magazine . Its fun to see her out of her element with the kids . She keeps on going and grows stronger and more determined as ever . Abraham is sexy and also sweet . When they are together they are such a great couple . The rest of the cast of characters range from sweet to funny. The kids are the best though . Love Tammy she is trying so hard to be an adult she forgot how to be a kid . Dolly is an actress and is kind of explosive and sweet at the same time . Conway is just a little sweet heart of a boy . You will fall in love with all of them. Trust me on that one .
This is a fun read that will keep you on the edge of the seat and cheering with every hurdle they jump over.  The author wraps the funny and the sweet up in a great package .  Noone deserves a happily ever after its Jeannie and Abraham .  I can't wait to see if there is more coming from Cotton Creek . So if you want a quirky fun read that will keep you warm . Check out VICE .
