Good morning my peeps , yes it is early on this sunny Saturday morning. Today is the second last day of reader round up and yes I have another new author to me. GRACIE by Britt Nichole.
BOOK BLURB
Most girls probably don’t go around picking up guys at family funerals.
Gracie was seventeen when her grandfather died. Grandpa was the one person in Gracie’s life who believed her capable of anything despite her right-sided cerebral palsy. So, when her parents decided to stay with Grandma for the summer, Gracie wasn’t sure what to do with herself. She certainly didn’t expect to meet Elliott, a family friend who showed up at the funeral with his own grandparents to pay their respects.Elliott was sweet, funny, and had the prettiest oceanic eyes that Gracie had ever seen. But he was able-bodied. Gracie’s one serious relationship had ended in disaster, and she was terrified of trying to trust somebody like Elliott again.
And when she wasn’t worried about her increasingly complicated feelings for Elliott, Gracie found herself harboring a decades-old family secret: Grandpa had left her a box of letters exposing a forbidden relationship that threatened to tear Gracie’s family apart.
The summer before her senior year certainly wasn’t shaping up to what Gracie expected it would be. Was she strong enough to keep Grandpa’s secret to herself? And, perhaps more importantly, could she bring herself to trust Elliott, or would her own insecurities cause her to push him away?
MY REVIEW
Gracie is about to start her senior year of high school when a tragedy hits them and they are on the way to say good bye to her grandfather. At the funeral she meets Elliot a sweet young man. She is having trouble trying to figure out her feelings because he is able bodied and she has a disability that she thinks everyone will in time start to dislike her and leave her behind . As they navigate the summer Gracie is plagued with the thoughts of the past and a relationship that went terribly wrong and the after effects of what a wrong word or sentence can do to destroy a person. Also finding out in letters of grandpa's secret life before he married grandma . Can she keep his secret and have a relationship with Elliot or will her insecurities push him away and leave her with a broken heart yet again.
Gracie is a strong girl but she has been through sooooo much being different is always a challenge and being disabled is a lot to take on, She has cerebral palsy on her right side so yes she limps and is conscious of it. She carries a lot of feelings that have her really putting herself down and honestly she tears down anything that could be good before it even happens. Her good friend Samantha is there as her rock and confidence builder. She never gets angry but she does put Gracie in her place sometimes and tells her to smarten up a bit. Elliot is the sweetest, kindest young man there is . He tries to not see the disability in Gracie . He makes her feel happy but like all good things the bad things creep in for out Gracie and she is always second guessing every thing that Elliot does or says to the point that it starts to bring her down to the place she was back in school. Each character is well crafted and complex . You want to love them in spite of the stupid things they do and say.
This is one of those stories that has you feeling so many different things . You really feel for Gracie and what she has endured in school with the bullies and you want to wrap her up and put her on a shelf. The story is about accepting yourself and what you can and can not control in your life. Also taking time to keep yourself and your mental health on the up. We see how it can wear you down and make you doubt yourself when you can get key board warriors posting stuff to harm anyone . This would be a great book for teens and preteens to help them figure out how to survive high school and find your true friends .
